MURDER, RACE, JUSTICE: When a 19-year-old black man was charged with the murder of 25-year-old Deborah Sykes in 1984, it set off a case that has helped define race relations in Winston-Salem for nearly 20 years. Darryl Hunt was convicted twice despite the lack of physical evidence. With a positive DNA match on December 20, 2004, another man was charged with the rape and murder of Sykes. After serving 19 years in prison, Hunt was released from prison on December 24, 2003. Hunt was exonerated on February 6, 2004. Click here to read the original series.
