William Hooper

Who: William Hooper, witness who reported seeing Sykes on the street as he drove to work

What he said: He told police he was driving to Hanes Dye and Finishing and saw two black men flanking a white woman on West End Boulevard. He said that the man to the woman's left was shaking his fist in her face and appeared to be saying something to her, and when he stepped back, the second man embraced the woman and kissed her on the lips. He described the man police believe was Hunt as being in his early 20s, taller and darker than the other man, wearing a dark shirt and pants, and at least 6 feet 2 inches tall, with no facial hair and not wearing a hat. He was unable to pick Hunt from a lineup. Similarly, a 1986 SBI report says that after Hooper saw Hunt's picture in the newspaper, he told his wife that "Darryl Hunt may have murdered Miss Sykes, but Hunt was not one of the individuals he observed with Deborah Sykes on Aug. 10, 1984."
