Thomas Murphy

Who: Thomas Murphy, witness who reported seeing Sykes on the street as he drove to work

What he said: One of the two people who reported seeing Sykes on the street on Aug. 10, Murphy told police he saw a black man and a white woman on the sidewalk on West End Boulevard as he headed to Hanes Dye and Finishing. He said that they were leaning toward each other as if they were drunk, and that the man had his right arm around the woman's neck and was holding her right hand in his left hand. He saw a second man about 100 feet down the block toward Chatham Road and Buxton Street. He described the black man with the woman as 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, and wearing a brown-checked shirt and light-colored pants. After spending numerous days with Detective Jim Daulton at the scene and poring over photographs, he pulled Darryl Hunt's picture and asked to see an in-person lineup, where he also identified Hunt.
